The possible the past about Pattaya

Pattaya’s identify progressed from the march of Phraya Tak (later King Taksin) and his army from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. This took area ahead of the drop of the ex- capital to the Burmese invaders in 1767.

When his army arrived at the bounds of what’s now Pattaya, he come upon the troops of Nai Klom, who made an effort to intercept him. When the 2 rulers met in person, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak’s dignified approach and his army’s strict discipline. He then surrendered not having a fight. The location the two armies confronted each other was termed Thap Phraya, which means the Armed forces of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing coming from the southwest to the northeast at the starting of the rainy season. In these days the city is formally know as Pattaya.

For years, Pattaya was a little fishing village. But a alter developed on April 26, 1961, when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who were fighting down in the Vietnam Conflict showed up in Pattaya for relaxation. From this beginning, Pattaya were made a popular beach resort which now allure hundreds of thousands of visitors. Fishermen’s huts along the beach were replaced by resort hotel and shopping malls. Fishing vessels were adapted to turn into vacationing boats.

Long Beach Garden Hotel and Spa, Pattaya by Ashley Monteiro

Where Are The Tourists?

Where are our dear foreign guests who usually invade the kingdom this time around? This is by no means a post backed up by hard facts and figures, but by simple observation and talks with tourists and hoteliers alike. OK, last year’s high season was a non-event after Bangkok’s airport seizures. But don’t only blame the international credit crunch and financial crisis. This holiday season Westerners travel to the Caribbean and Southern Europe, to Turkey and wherever. But not to Thailand.

Occupancy rates in Thailand’s major hotels are miserable. Had a talk with a big shot of the Dusit in Hua Hin and some regular guests who stay there every year. Never seen that place so quiet. Hua Hin’s famous night market is empty compared to previous high seasons. Tweets tourist Bob the “hotel in Cha Am we’ve been staying at every year for the past ten years is also A LOT quieter than usual” – and a friend in Pattaya tells me in December you usually have to push your way through Walking Street. Not this time.

Our honorable leaders prefer to blame external circumstances. But don’t underestimate the ghosts of the airport occupations. Had some family friends coming over from Europe who even thought that the reds – not yellows! – were seizing the airports a year ago and now that the reds announce new demonstrations for January they’re scared if they’ll run into trouble. Friends that told me that back home in Europe many Thailand regulars avoid the kingdom for fear of a new breakdown. Thailand keeps on paying a heavy price for this sort of superficial stability.

It is impossible to put a price tag on the immediate and remote damages caused by Thailand’s political upheaval. But a sure thing is that the country keeps on suffering to this day from those acts some called peaceful and necessary. Holiday packages to Thailand don’t cost a fortune. Anyone who wants to visit Thailand and shops around can visit Thailand. But that’s not the point. The point is Thailand removed herself knowingly, if not deliberately from the top spots of international travel and tourism.

Nah, I’m not even mentioning all the scams and cheats that make it again and again into the world’s media furthermore scaring off potential visitors. But if the suffering tourism sector is any guidance how other industrial sectors of Thailand suffer – such as stagnant direct foreign investment due to the country’s obvious and hidden risks and lack of transparency – well then it’s easy to do the math yourself, isn’t it.

I’m not saying. I’m just saying. Whatever rosy picture the government is trying to present, question it, question it, question it. The situation on the ground remains a very different one. Shop keepers who hoped for a splendid high season after a long drought and were stocking up on goods are in despair.

Some basic tourism downturn statistic is available here. In the first ten months of this year international arrivals were down 30% – and counting.

The tourism & sports minister just announced he “believes” Thailand could still get 14 million visitors this year … Believing as a part of governing, there you go.

December 2009 must be one of the worst high seasons in the history of Thai tourism. Tells me the big shot of Hua Hin’s Dusit that between Christmas and year’s end a 100,000 holidayers are expected in Hua Hin … Maybe locals. Forget the foreign market for a while.

The thing to do would be to offer irresistible price incentives. But try to book a better hotel in a seaside resort. The money you’re asked to spend for a few nights pays you two weeks including flights and food and everything in – again – the Caribbean or Southern Europe.

A week ago I booked a fancy New Year’s Eve dinner and show at a better hotel. The hotel expects some 200 guests for the party. Well I got ticket numbers 0005 to 0008. Eight tickets sold so far for a party with 200 … The tourism biz may have been a walk in the park some time ago.

I doubt that any of the major hotels will have a full 100% occupancy rate over the festive days. Remember, not too long ago fully booked hotels was the order of Thailand’s tourism days.

Japanese TV personality Ai Haruna held a press conference in Tokyo December 3 in which she stated the desire for Japan to be more tolerant toward transpeople and others of diverse sexual orientations.

The 37 year old beauty was already a household name in Japan before she was crowned Miss International Queen 2009 last month in Pattaya, Thailand.

“I was surprised to see many transgender people work at hotels and restaurants with no problem in Thailand,” she said.

“Japan can learn many things from other Asian nations like Thailand and the Philippines.”

In Japan, people can legally change their gender on official documents but transgender people still face spoken and silent discrimination, Haruna said.

She recalled condominium owners had declined to let her rent apartments because neighbors may object.

“I was rejected five straight times,” she said.

“I think Japan is behind.”

Haruna said she had lived with difficulties since when she was a child.

“I was born with a very masculine sounding boy’s name. But I always wanted to be a girl, always dreamed of becoming a pretty idol seen on TV.”

“But for a long time life was very difficult for me,” she said in a quivering voice.

“Even after I had a sex change operation at the age of 19 and had my first boyfriend, I encountered many, many obstacles that constantly made me realize I wasn’t a woman.”

Haruna said that she wanted to work internationally to raise awareness for sexual minorities. “I want to work for those who are troubled like me.”

“I want to work in the world. And of course, I want to be married some day.”

And may you be successful not only in raising awareness about transgender issues during your reign, but in your homeland as well.

Buzz Aldrin was scheduled for a phone interview on the Friday, June 8, 2007, edition of Your World with Neil Cavuto on the Fox News cable channel. Originally booked to talk about the latest space shuttle launch, he suddenly found himself being asked about Paris Hilton and had some very interesting things to say. Friday, June 8, 2007, should have been a big news day. A former Preacher’s Wife was sentenced to three years in prison for shooting her husband in the back while he slept. A Tax Protestor couple in New Hampshire discovered what happens when you challenge the authority of people you elect to office: You get state police and an army of federal troops with tanks and federal agents with submachine guns at your door.

Architecture: Pattaya Island by Vieeto Voom

BANGKOK, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Two Chinese tourists died in a speed-boat-clash on Wednesday off Thailand’s Pattaya coast, while at least another 14 people on board got injured.

The Chinese travel agency that organized the tour group identified the two victims, who got drowned, as Zheng Honglu, male,57, and Chen Dingshan, male, 61.

According to an official from the Chinese embassy in Thailand, another nine tourists from the Chinese mainland and one from China’s Hong Kong, were injured when two speed boats clashed at about 12:30 p.m. local time in Pattaya offshore.

The accident happened about 100 meters offshore, said Liu Xiaojian, an injured Chinese tourist, when an one-engine speed boat named Ta-wat-chai-nam-chok collided with the other one-engine speed boat named New Friend.

“The boat was carrying us, 29 tourists from China, three tour guides and a boat driver to go back to Pattaya shore from Lan Island, when I felt the strong shock suddenly and the boat begin to sink right away into the sea,” Liu said in the hospital. He said his nose was broken in the accident and probably need to accept surgery.

The other boat, with 13 tourists from the Middle East, Britain and Russia along with two boat drivers, stuck onto the shallow water, according to The Nation online.

All the injured had been sent to Pattaya Memorial Hospital immediately, said the hospital’s coordinator Somkiat Potrerayut, adding that eight of them had been discharged as their injuries are minor.

Besides the 9 mainlanders and a Hong Kong tourist, there were also two British, one Pakistani and one Thai injured in the accident, he said.

Somkiat said so far there are six Chinese, including the one from Hong Kong, remaining in hospital, with two of them in ICU. “But the two guys are fully conscious and are able to talk, ” he said, adding they will stay in the ICU for one or two more days after suffering the condition of “near drowning”.

The two victims, who were identified to be dead on the way to the Memorial Hospital, had been sent to the nearest public hospital for the possible autopsy, Somkiat told Xinhua.

According to The Nation online, Muang Pattaya’s deputy superintendent Pol Lt Col Chanapat Nawalak said the initial police investigation found that the two boats drove in the opposite direction to one another, arriving at and departing from the pier, when a side of New Friend boat hit the other boat’s rear, causing both boats to break and sink. Police was aiming to press the charge of reckless driving, causing other people’s deaths and injuries, against both boats’ drivers.

The officials from the Chinese embassy arrived in Pattaya this afternoon to help investigate the accident and to show their condolence to the dead and the injured.

The Chinese victims were under a tour group organized by Wuhan Spring International Travel Service of China’s Hubei Province. Ms.Liu Huiping, an staff from the travel agency, told Xinhua that they will send staff to Thailand Thursday to take care of their tourists and other issues.

Beach resort town Pattaya is located in Thailand’s eastern province of Chon-bu-ri.

Tourism is a big industry in Thailand. In fact, it contributes more than 12 percent to Thailand’s GDP. However, the tourism sector has been severely affected by political instability in recent years. The airport blockade by anti-government protesters last December damaged the international reputation of Thailand as a tourist destination.

In the past months, numerous news stories exposing the different scams experienced by tourists in Thailand further eroded the image of Thailand. Last September, the TV documentary entitled “Big Trouble in Thailand” aired on a British television channel. This show, which featured the bad behavior of foreign tourists and locals in Thailand, generated a heated debate in the cyberspace.

Here is the description of the show from the Bravo channel website:

Bravo’s cameras go beyond the idyllic beaches and tropical island life to capture a rare and fascinating insight into British holidaymakers as they party in paradise and discover the horrors that can happen when things go drastically wrong.

From adrenaline fuelled drug busts, organised tourist scams, scorned lady-boys, violent brothel disputes, bar room brawls, brutal murders, street robberies and sexual assaults, the series is filmed in the popular tourist hotspots of Koh Samui, Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chang Mai.

Oneditorial, a Thai citizen, sees nothing wrong with the program

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the programme. Given the title of the programme it is guaranteed to feature scenes depicting the bad behaviour of some tourists and locals. To my surprise, many people have been making a big fuss about it.

Johnny is not happy that it portrays Thailand in a negative way:

The problem with this clearly that it paints Thailand in a less than flattering picture. Sure Thailand as corruption, drinking, sleaze, drugs and other nasties shown but there is more to Thailand than this.

Another issue is the alleged staging of events to over dramatise the series. If it is true, as evidence suggests, then this makes the documentary all the more worse for fabricating events, one of which involved a Pattaya-based gangster.

Monsicha Hoonsuwan, another Thai citizen, does not want the international community to view Thailand as a “gangster” country

I have watched a little bit of the show on Bangkok Diaries, and in deed I found it very interesting. Of course, it was outrageous. As a Thai, I do not want other people to perceive Thailand as a “gangster” country, like the way some countries are perceived. And if there are staged circumstances to dramatize the series, it definite would not gain my approval.

My problem with the series, though, isn’t the fact that they show the “real” Thailand. My problem is I don’t understand the intention of the creator of this series. Portraying a country in a different angle – that I can understand. But why Thailand specifically? Don’t the problems in the series exist universally – in every state? That kind of gets me thinking.

Bangkok Diaries uploads the episodes of the documentary. The blogger agrees that the issues tackled by the show are indeed genuine but doubts if they are often experienced by tourists:

On one level it does seem somewhat sensationalized which is to be expected of anything you watch on television but on another level this stuff does happen. The jetski rental guys are crooks. Dumb ass tourists take drugs in Thailand despite the ample warnings everywhere. Idiot drunks get themselves in trouble and get the crap kicked out of them by locals. So on that level, all of this stuff happens. The big question is whether it happens as frequently as portrayed in the program.

Thailand, Land of Smiles thinks the documentary is a fraud and that some scenes were staged

I think Big Trouble in Thailand is much more than a waste of time…I feel it’s a fraud meant to paint Thailand in a negative light. The journalism was so one sided and leaned towards sympathetic to all of the British nationals involved. I truly believe that parts of this documentary were staged.

The controversial documentary has caught the attention of Thai authorities. Some are angry over it while some promised to act on the tourist scams featured in the show

One good thing that has come of this is that Thai authorities seem to be cracking down on the jet ski operators and the scams they perpetrate on the tourist community

Leosia criticizes the reactions of the Thai police to the airing of the documentary

This is a fairly typical response from the police. Whenever there is a problem, it must have been “staged” or someone is being “vindictive” or there is a plot against national security. Lots of bland statements repeated ad nauseum.

The Police LT is of course speaking from experience, but he’s making the mistake of thinking that foreigners have the same motivations as the Thai police force. That is, the staging of cover-ups, falsifications and filming video evidence of the suspect “pointing” at the scene of the crime.

The producer/director of TV documentary replies to critics of the show.

When it comes to scuba diving, many swimmers are misinformed. They think that you have to be a competent diver and a strong swimmer to enjoy underwater swimming.

However, this is simply not true, although before you go scuba diving in the ocean, it is sensible that you have some fundamental knowledge of diving and decent swimming skills. However, you do not have to be an experienced diver. After all, everyone has to go scuba diving for the first time.

Scuba diving is a pretty self-explanatory activity really. Scuba divers can be seen in many movies and in many amusement parks. While the general idea of scuba diving is the same everywhere in the world, what you will see underwater is not. There are a number of underwater animals and plants that can only be seen in certain countries. This is one of the reasons why you should book a scuba diving voyage carefully.

In Thailand for instance, scuba divers are often able to swim with porpoise and sea turtles. This alone is worth the cost of scuba diving for many people. Aside from swimming with sea animals, you can also spend your scuba diving holiday examining life and the environment underwater.

Just a few of the many marine creatures that you can easily see in Thailand are giant lobsters, electric eels, sting rays and a large number of different kinds of fish. The fish found in Thai waters are very diverse because of the incredible environment they have there, which includes natural reefs, sandbanks and wrecks..

Maritime creatures are unquestionably the most exhilarating part of scuba diving, but there are also other submarine activities in which to participate. For example, many scuba divers enjoy diving along coral reefs. Coral reefs are not only home to a large quantity of marine animals, but they are also fantastic to explore. You will find it exciting swimming around the many different shaped reefs.

Having said this, unless you are an experienced underwater diver, you should go scuba diving with a trained professional. These professionals are most commonly found by means of scuba diving tour groups. Scuba diving tour groups can be found all along the coast of Thailand. Scuba diving is a prevalent pastime among foreigners in Thailand, so you would be astute to book your scuba diving trips well ahead of time.

As well as booking a scuba dive with a trained diver, you can also take scuba diving lessons at most coastal resorts in Thailand. Many of these locations also offer guided tours. Scuba diving lessons are obtainable as group lessons or private lessons. Private lessons may be a little more costly, but many first time scuba divers find them worthwhile, in more ways than one.

To find accompanied tours designed for scuba divers, you can ask in local sea front bars, at your hotel reception or at the nearest tourist information bureau. Whether you have already selected your destination or not, you will easily be able to find local underwater tours or lesson, especially in the more popular Thai cities like Pattaya and Phuket. The things that you will see underwater will make your holiday even more unforgettable and make you wish you had started years previously.

Social Media Travel Competition Winners

Posted by Pixelhead

The following is a press release about a cool opportunity for two Social Media Travelers. I was contacted by Ben, who asked me if I would share their story with the readers of this and my other travel blog. Please consider adding them on their various other networks and helping them with their cause.

Orlando, Florida – 19 November 2009 – Orlando Residents Ben Reed and Brian Sommer have been selected as finalists by The Tourism Authority of Thailand in their social media competition: Ultimate Thailand Explorers. Beginning December 10th, Reed and Sommer will embark on a 6-Day assignment to Pattaya, Thailand where the couple will use social media websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to promote the Country of Thailand as a vacation destination.   To be selected as finalists, Reed and Sommer underwent a grueling vetting process including submitting a 1-minute YouTube video explaining why they want to go to Thailand and how they would promote their chosen destination. Selected as 1 of 25 teams from over 200 applicants from dozens of countries, the pair next had to solicit the most votes from Internet users from around the world.   On achieving this milestone Reed said, “We are thankful to the hundreds of fans and followers that voted for us each day.” He continued by adding, “we started with a blank website and in just a few short weeks, grew a twitter following that reached out to tens of thousands of individuals and built an integrated Facebook campaign asking people to vote for us.” Both Reed and Sommer are connected on traditional social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, but have also established a presence on Flickr, WAYN and have reached our to prominent travel bloggers too.

Reed and Sommer may be followed today on twitter at www.twitter.com/benandbrianthai as well as on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ultimate-Thailand-Explorers-Ben-Brian/128431649795. “Managing our social media sites is a full-time job,” Reed said. Their official blog address is www.ultimatethailandexplorers.com/blog/pattaya.   The couple will compete against four additional teams in the Cities of: Bangkok, Phuket, Chang Mai and Koh Samui for the Grand Prize of $10,000 and the title of Ultimate Thailand Explorer. Prizes are also awarded to individuals who participate in voting in the Ultimate Thailand Explorers Competition. Voting will take place from 1 December 2009 – 8 January 2010 at the official competition site, www.ultimatethailandexplorers.com.   “Neither of us have been to Thailand before, so we are looking forward to learning about the culture, sampling the local cuisine and of course discovering the many attractions and beaches that Pattaya has”, said Sommer. “We are excited to share our adventures with our followers and fans and have plans to encourage them to connect with us while we are in the city”, he concluded.   The Ultimate Thailand Explorers Competition follows similar efforts by tourism bureaus from around the globe. Locally in Orlando, the Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureaus selected 1 couple to capture their experiences at Orlando’s world-renowned attractions. And in Australia, Tourism Queensland selected 1 individual for the “Best Job in the World”.   Inspired by family vacations as a child, Ben is a travel blogger at adventureswithben.com. Through engaging, humorous and candid experiences from his travels to Africa, Europe, South America, North America and Asia, Reed shares his passion for travel. His full-time job is with a training and development organization in Orlando.   A physical therapist in Kissimmee, Brian is an avid traveler. His most memorable experiences include www.twitter.com/benandbrianthai as well as on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ultimate-Thailand-Explorers-Ben-Brian/128431649795. “Managing our social media sites is a full-time job,” Reed said.
